I have a laptop hard drive that is too dead for me to boot up in my Gateway laptop, but is just alive enough that a hard drive recovery company could get the data off of it.
Depends on the problem. If it's logical (virus, corruption, partition) you can buy some software and recover it yourself. If it's hardware (clicking noises, no spin) you're going to have to spend $1000+ for a pro to recover your data. Take it to these guys, they do a free evaluation and quote. I even got a student discount. http://www.cbltech.com

You will pay an amazing amount of money if you send it off somewhere. They will take it apart in a clean room and try to recover the data.
You are better off getting an adapter that will make the 2.5 inch hard drive used in notebook computers plug into the typical connector for 3.5 inch drive. It really ought to be less than $10. Plug it into a friend's regular computer and pull the data off that way.
