What Is The Best (least Expensive Pref. Free) Data Recovery Program?

Hello, everyone, I do not want to spend alot of money (if i don't have to) Most likely I will only use this program once and hopefully will not have any HD's fail and need recovery anytime soon so I dont want to spend alot of money, but I have an 80gig Western Digital HD, that due to an NTLDR not found error and me trying to fix it with the Ultimate Boot CD, now has corrupt partitions (I think), anyway Windows doesnt recognize it anymore and tries to prompt me to reformat it. . . but I want to at least try to recover some of the data off of it before I just throw in the towel and reformat. I have been running a program I found on this webiste called Handy Recovery 3.0, It looked like a pretty good program but I dont really know what to even look for in a data recovery program. HR30 has now been running for OVER 38 hours and has only covered about 56 gigs of the 80 gig hard drive! Is this normal? from what I can tell it is only trying to read the partitions it is not recovering any data? And it said the demo version will only recover 1 file a day . . . so am I just wasting my time trying to use it? Can someone please help me determine what program is right for me? I run WIN XP. THANKS!!!

I have not used the software that you have mentioned. I have however, used StompSoft's Recover Lost Data software in the past with good success. Although this has been mostly for just the retrieval of several items not a whole drive. I will say most any recovery program does take some time use but 1 file a day sounds ridiculous. You can check out the Recover Lost Data software information at this link.
