Seems like a lot. My old old computer used one floppy for this purpose. It's an HP Pavilion m8000n if that helps. Vista of course.
My Acer took 12,it's not unusual these days, manufacturers include so much "junk" like pretty HP.Compaq etc logos that appear when you boot up and a whole lot of other stuff that they think you need.
However I think it's a good idea to make the recovery disks as you will regain the space on your hard drive that was being taken up by the recovery partition.

My new HP with Vista required 10 CD's so I don't think that is odd.

With bigger hard drives comes bigger backups. If you really want to backup everything buy an external hard drive. You'll be given the option to backup to that drive from the Backup Center in Vista.

This is what I did, call HP or go to there online help and ask them to make your recovery cds. I think it was $15.00 for them to do it and it was not even that many cds. Don't quote me on the price as I did it with my laptop also.
Good Luck!!

hp usually let you use dvd's aswell, my compaq from 2004 let me use either which obviously means less discs… in the case of mine, just 1 dvd
