I need to recover data from my laptop hard drive.?

I have purchased an adaptor that links my laptop hard drive to my PC via USB. I need to recover data from this drive as my laptop is no longer working. When connected it displays all folders/files apart from my personal folder (firstname surname) in the Documents and Settings section. It says 'Access is denied'. Would this be because I had a user name and password to log on to my laptop? Are there any ways of getting round this does anybody know? My laptop ran Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition and I just set up a username and password myself in Control Panel.
This 'access denied' screen does not give me the option to input a username or password at all although I do know what it was on my laptop if it is needed?
I don't want to have to take it to a data recovery company as there must be a way round this?

'Files and Settings Transfer Wizard'

Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Files and Settings Transfer Wizard

alternatively, if your present os is vista,

    hi mate,

this is a very hard mate. I am just thinking that this can be done by doing simple file sharing but the problem is that your laptop is no longer working. There are some special softwares available but cost money. will get back to you soon

Okay, what you need to do is go onto your laptop and set the C: drive to allow file transfers over the network. If the pc will run, go into my compuiter, right-click on C:, go to sharing, and then set it to allow other users, blah blah blah, I know the risks, blah, and to let other people on the network modify your settings. Then, you can acces the files without the error, from the other pc. The only other way is to remove the laptop hard drive, and set it as a slave drive in your computrer, requiring yet another special connector.
