I need help backing up the music files on my computer. I use them for iTunes but I need to do a PC recovery?

I don't want all my music files deleted, but I suspect that there is a virus lurking in the hard drive. How can I back them up and still be able to sync them with iTunes?

OK. If you have an iPod, this is really easy. If you can fit it, get all your music (and video if you have any) on your iPod. If you can't fit all of it, get all the important files. The, do whatever you need to do w/ your computer (like reinstall software, get a new comp, anything). Then, go and download this:

http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/ipod_itunes/musicrescue.html

it's a program that can detect any music and video on your iPod and back it up onto your hard drive. I'm pretty sure this works with almost all iPods. I don't think it works with iPhone, and I'm not sure about iPod touch.

If you don't want that option, I strongly suggest using an external hard drive to back up all your important files. Good luck with that virus.

forget doing a recovery….start your computer in safe mode with networking by tapping the F8 key while the computer is booting up…uninstall any anti virus program you may have….download the free home version of avast from http://www.avast.com and run a boot time scan which is part of the set up….that will get rid of all those nasty lurking viruses and save you from losing everything…cheers

Go to the folder called 'iTunes Music' (located under Music \ iTunes). Copy the files to some other media (memory stick, cd, network storage, etc). After reinstalling the operating system, install itunes, then copy the files back over to the harddrive. You will need to 'authorize' the files (look in the iTunes menu i think it might be under the Store label in the menu bar), it'll say 'authorize' in the menu bar options.

What I have done with all my music to keep it safe is this
I made a directory on my d drive ( hope you have one) and call it d:/My Music.. Now you can copy all the music you already have to that new directory. Now your music is safe in case you have to format your pc. You must let iTunes know about the new directory you made and that there from now on all the music is stored.
