You could try running the system recovery disc from inside windows. Put the disc in, go to start, double click my computer, double click your your CD drive- D:, E:, F: (or whatever it is) and locate the exe or startup file.

check to see if the bios settings are set to boot from the cd if so maybe your cd is scratch and the cddrive can't read it if so get a copy of windows xp sp2 and it will format the drive for you and install the windows if you are trying to use another windows like win98 you'll have to get a boot disk from somewhere and when it boots to dos type format c: of get a copy of diskmanager and follow instructions

Try doing a "system recovery"..Good Luck..45 minutes to do..

My windows XP, was already loaded on my computer, when I bought it. These instructions, will clean everything off of your hard drive, so you must back up anything that you want to save. I have done this three times, and I got these instructions, from a computer tech. When starting your computer, tap the F-10 key. click on next-yes-and follow the instructions, that come up on your screen. When you are finished, your computer, will look just like it did, when you first bought it. Do these steps, in order, when finished.
1. set up windows firewall
2. windows update (click express)
3. install your anti-virus program (update)
4. install anti-spyware (update)

Press F2 get into the BIOS menu and set first boot up from the CD, save and exit.

does the system crash or just hang…..or does it just bypass the disc and load windows as normal?

If it's just going into windows then what you need to do is setup the boot sequence in the bios. Usually it's an F2 or F12 key that you hit right as soon as you power up that will bring you into your bios settings. From there, you have to poke around looking for the boot sequence options. Set it so that it boots from the disc drive as 1st option and hardrive in 2nd option…then save the settings and it should load the disc.

You need to go to your BIOs settings. You would need to go to your motherboard manual. You will need to hol something like F2 or F12 when it shows you the Sony screen before loading windows. You need to go to the Boot options or order and make it so the cd-rom bootsbefore the Hard Drive
