Data Recovery on Crashed HD?

My Windows Vista laptop crashed……again! and I want to try to recover data, but I can't load Windows. Is there anything I can download burn to a CD from another computer, and insert it into my laptop that will run from the command prompt, or even better, autorun when I boot up the computer (and change the BIOS settings to look for CD first)

Thanks!
I'm not sure of the partitions. How do I check?

put more details plz… do u hav mre than 1 partiton? if yes then if u hav saved ur docs in the other partitons just format ur laptop on the drive tht does nt contain ur saved docs… the saved docs shud however b saved in another partition which doesnt contain windows system installion…

cheers

You will need another computer and a usb to IDE cable and it will be like looking at a external HDD. DONT turn the HDD on too many times before then because if it is bad you could lose your data by powering it on and off too many times.
