There are many ways to recover from a formatted hard drive.

Most of them require a decent amount of computer "know-how" to work.

Do you want to recover data that was on there or just restore the operating system?

If you just want to get your files back, I would try a bootable windows cd like this one:
    http://www.ubcd4win.com/
It comes with all sorts of tools, including a disc recovery program.

Burn that to a cd and boot from it.

On the desktop there will be a icon that has to do with recovery. Its been a while, but I think its called recover my files or something.

Anyway, run that and than drag whatever files you want onto a pen drive of some sort. DO NOT TRY TO RECOVER THE FILES ONTO THE SAME HARD DRIVE YOU ARE TRYING TO RECOVER FROM! Sorry for the caps but yea thats very important.

    Hope this helps

You can't do much with the hard disk without a Disk Operating System – which you don't have, so you might have difficulty in fixing the problem youself.

The easiest option is to have the disk removed, connected to another machine, and attempt the recovery – this is almost certainly a professional job, and one that you could pay a lot of money for.

If you could use extra space, then by purchasing a second hard-drive (or salvaging one from an old PC) you could try the following:

    - Disconnect your hard drive (to prevent further data loss)
    - Using a spare/ second hard drive, re-install your operating system (or obtain an operating system from somewhere to install temporarily)
    - Install an "unformat" program (there's lots available, such as PCTOOLS and ZAR)
    - Reconnect the hard disk and attempt to un-format it
    - Change the boot priority from your new/ temporary hard disk back to your original, recovered hard disk.
    - Remove the new/ temporary hard disk, or delete your temporary operating system from it.

It obviously won't be as straightforward as the above list, but it gives you an idea of the steps you'd need to follow.

You may have to reinstall your operating system all over again, and if you have any pics or important info you will lose it.If you have to do that you will probably have to get help from tech support from whatever company sold it to you.you can make a back-up cd to save all your pics and info.

With your HP, the D partition held your 'System Restore' files.

Without asking HP, there is probably nothing, within reason and lots of expense that you can do.

You might ask HP if they could whip up an .iso file for your D partition and send it to you to install.
